One thought ahead. Three sentences behind.

I have quiet admiration for standup comics and their ability to go onstage in front of a live audience.  It takes a lot of courage to keep going with material that already expired. That’s the problem with comedy.  What may be fresh and funny on one set may be rotten by the time you tell it to your girlfriend when she asks if you found a real job.  Comedy is not easy and when you are on stage there is no escape.

I think it would be nice if comics were able to take a timeout like the ones afforded to professional athletes.  Maybe their material would be better served if they adopted the changeover approach tennis players use between odd numbered games.  It would give them the opportunity to sit down on a plastic chair, drink some alcohol-infused Gatorade and listen to their manager tell them, “You really need to lay off the frozen dinner jokes.  Nobody is laughing at them.  You hear me?  N-O-B-O-D-Y!!!”
